Making your building stand out sometimes takes more than signage or digital alone.

City of Fernie

Fernie, British Columbia

Blackflag was recently awarded the contract with the City of Fernie to design, fabricate and install feature entrance signs and wayfinding signs to help enhance visitors experience plus allow for better navigations throughout the town and trail system. Our designs started with research of the area, materials, colors, nature and history. We then came up with a large feature signs that incorporated all those elements plus some of the indigenous history. We wanted to give Fernie a feature sign that would get visitors to stop and take photos or walk around while entering.

Using the same style and material spec, we came up with a wayfinding family for both the town and trails plus some feature signs we coined “Window to the past” which included a corten steel plaque and structural base plus a see through lexan panel with translucent print show casing the history of certain historical sights throughout the land.

Our next design was intended to be located near the entrance sign, we had no direction other than to come up with something that would grab peoples attention and allow them to walk around the visitor area. We worked with the city and the Ktunaxa Nation on several freestanding corten steel pillars, each with lighting features and cut out images that tell a story of the different history, stories and geographic features of the area.
