Information Signs

When creating an Informational Wayfinding sign package for an area, building or architectural structure it is essential to develop a strategic system that will adapt to the environment.

TRAIL WAYFINDING SYSTEMS:

Blackflag Projects has worked with numerous municipalities, town and Parks & Recreation Departments on a variety of trail wayfinding projects. Our mission is to merge the environmental surroundings with brand and information. After extensive research,
site visits and team brainstorming, we work with each group to develop a comprehensive trail identification and wayfinding signage system each area. Project Goals include:

FORT EDMONTON PARK

Wayfinding and Trail System
Our team was hired to work with both the Fort Edmonton Park (City of Edmonton) group and the signage/marketing contractor to come up with a system, mapping and conceptual design for the new 160 Million dollar revamp of the entire theme park, walking trail, parking and railroad system. The overall project was a fun challenge for us as we were able to channel the history of the area, using natural raw materials and colors all while incorporating the new brand and vision of the entire park area.

EDMONTON CONVENTION CENTRE

The Edmonton Convention Centre is one of the most prestigious convention buildings in Canada, hosting over 1 million guests per year. We were thrilled to be a part of the design team hired to implement a more modern interior and exterior vision and strategy based on the number of guests and the new branding. The overall project consisted of interior wayfinding strategies, digital and non digital directories, A feature interior 60 foot digital screen and multiple exterior digital displays, light ng and new signage. Currently we have completed stage 1 and have been delayed due to Covid.

TOWN OF SHELBURNE, ONTARIO

The town of Shelburne, Ontario hired us to recreate downtown wayfinding, street sign, directional and entrance signs. 36 signs total as a design, build contract. This beautiful little French town has an established Victorian style characteristic so we used Victorian elements and incorporated them with the town’s new branding for a timeless modern look with historic values. We could tell the client would stick with the idea of a modernized look and feel without losing the history and character that makes Shelburne special so we came up with a design package that blends both and gives the town a better visual feel, sense of directional and information.

SPRING LAKE

EXTERIOR TRAIL WAYFINDING
Spring Lake trail is located near Kananaskis Country, The trail is a walk through trees to a spring that gushes out of a wall of rock. This trail branches off from Watridge Lake Trail, 3.9 km from the trailhead at Mount Shark Day Use.year. We wanted to bring together a series of natural earth tones and an exterior vision based on guiding guests along the trail and informing them of the history of the area. The overall project consisted of exterior wayfinding strategies, directional signs, trail mapping and information.

COLWOOD, BRITISH COLUMBIA

EXTERIOR WAYFINDING
This is a wayfinding package design family we submitted for the city of Colwood, BC. The package is designed to bolster the community brand and encourage tourism in the area. Our designers created the concept that will highlight on the wayfinding sign, making it easy for the traffic to navigate within the city.

For a wayfinding solution to be successful, it requires adequate placement planning, design study and ample amount of information. Information needs to be presented clearly, directly, and efficiently, to give passing traffic enough details to make a decision in the shortest amount of time possible. Designing symbols, text height, and identifying sign location is critical as it can affect visual clarity for the users.

PEOPLE DRIVEN

We design with the users in mind, by doing so we are able to create designs that represent the business or community on a deeper level. As part of our strategy, we study traffic flow, branding, history and intent of the project into our designs. ACTIVE TRAVEL

Wayfinding system is designed to assist all forms of traffic including pedestrian, cyclist and automobile drivers. An effective wayfinding helps traffic navigate while maintaining their state of motion. Wayfinding signs communicate information to people and assist them with their commute while actively removing barriers to a smooth travel.

INCLUSIVE DESIGN

When designing a wayfinding package, it is vital that design can be accessible to all types of user including people of age and ability levels. Black Flag projects is experience in developing wayfinding packages that conforms to Sign Association of Canada (SAC), International Sign Association (ISA) and Alberta Sign Association (ASA) standards for inclusive design clauses.

PREDICTABLE

For a wayfinding package to be efficient, there has to be a system in placed that people can recognize. Patterns, networks, and unity of design are factors that determines if the design is effective. Predictability helps users understand and adjust quickly when navigating intersections or places they’ve never been before.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

Navigation from place to place is an integral part of everyday life. Where are you? Where are you going? People use their knowledge and previous experience to find their way. What did you see, why did you see it and what did you do with the information?

When creating a visually effective wayfinding system we need to take all of the research and information available to us into account. Research is always our first step. Not only what will look the best but what will be the most effective way to direct people throughout each building or space.

Everything is taken into deep consideration during the initial planning stages including color, contrast, font, font size and of course placement. Only after all of this has been carefully developed do we start looking at design elements.

INITIAL MEETING & CONTRACT SIGNING

Our team will conduct a meeting with all parties involved which includes local agencies, key stakeholders, coordinators, and the public to have a better understanding of project objectives. BlackFlag Projects will then identify key factors that can affect the designs to guide the project outline throughout the span of the project. With the use of project details and installation priorities provided by the clients.

2.

OCULAR VISIT & SITE REVIEW

We will conduct a field review of existing and site assessment of wayfinding opportunities and constraints. This will be an inventory of existing signage and infrastructures, future developments areas, and hazards that need to be discussed with the client. We’ll discuss and review navigational challenges, attractions, streets, pedestrians, transits, trails and highway network signs. This maintains a continuous flow of wayfinding experience of customers in the area. During the field assessment, we will record existing signs including quantity, locations and conditions. This creative concept stage, we will explore and refine options for branding, color, typography, and visual design elements.

3.

IDENTIFY BRANDING & SIGN STANDARD

The design team will create proposals and concepts for the project. These deliverables aims to increase community pride, economy, tourism, renewed community leadership, partnerships. Sign standard will be the guiding principles in developing media content, wayfinding elements, graphics, and business/community branding.

MATERIAL SELECTION & FABRICATION

Upon the approval of the string committee, we will start developing designs and illustrations for each site. Our team will then create a material select on proposal for the signage that will be installed. This process includes color pantone swatches review, sizing and fabrications drawings. Our management team refers to the priority list provided by the client to establish a project timeline schedule and implementation roll-out plan.

5.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATIONS

During the fabrication process, we’ll send out our installers to review hazards on site and what equipment they need to bring during the removal and installation of the new signage. We will inform the steering team of the reports, and provide recommendations to prevent damages, interrupt on business hours, and hazards to clients.
Based on the agreed terms, our company is able to repair/ refinished exist ng signage.

  • Level 1- Removal of Existing
  • Level 2- Repairs and Refacing if possible
  • Level 3-Installations of New Signage

Once the new signage is ready, our professional installers will schedule their visit and coordinate with the management.
